This is a 1 day course located at James’ workshop near Braintree, Essex with both Matt and James
Planned to be a 9-5 timescale, but if it ends up being longer, so be it, we’re pretty flexible
You’ll turn your own mallet to your own shape and design and turn your own marking knife. We’ll discuss wood choices in advance as James and Matt would assemble the mallets/knives prior to the day as they’d need 48 hours minimum to cure
We would then make some new ones on the day from scratch, made from a selection of woods you can choose from on the day, all the way up to epoxying, that James and Matt will later finish and raffle/auction off for a charity of your choice
We will make some custom pencils and chopsticks out of stupid exotic materials that nobody will have pencils or chopsticks made out of
We will cover topics throughout the day that you want to go into more detail on that we’ll discuss in advance to try and personalise the workshop to what YOU want to cover

Stabilising
Wood selection/identification
Finish selection/application and home made finishes
Product Development
Sawing Techniques
Chisel sharpening and use
Plane sharpening, Setup and Use
Carbide vs HSS Turning tools
There’ll be a goody bag and a t-shirt and pizza and beer and if you get a hotel nearby we can even do a dinner too and carry on the conversation. We’re hoping that the goody bag for you to take away will have a value in excess of £125!! The whole day has a wide scope for adaptability and personalisation!!
Costs will be based on your choice of materials for the Mallet and the Knife shown in the attached price lists, plus £500. 50% deposit to confirm your place, non-refundable but transferable
A negative Covid Test (PCR) will be required in advance of the weekend!
